The books Monster and Incognegro have a lot of things in common. They both talk about race issues and how their is white privelage in America and it is easier to be accused of somthing if you are black. Both of these movies have a black man on trial and it is suspected that they will be proven guilty no matter what the circumstances. They create a conversation because you read the book from the perspective of black people and see that it is a hard life. These texts both relate to our talks in class because they both talk about the power of race and the many times unconscious privelages whites get. I thought the video we watched was very interesting because a black family sitting in their car asleep got called the cops on twice while the white boys messing up a car only got it called on them once. That shows a lot that there is white privelage still around today,

I like how you mentioned that both books were narrated by black characters. That really does put a different spin on how we view their crimes. I also agree with what you said about white people just assuming that blacks will be proven guilty no matter what in some circumstances. It seems to be true for blacks too because in Monster, Steve was sure he was going to be sentenced to more jail or given the death penalty.
ReplyDeleteYou brought up a good point about both stories being told by black people. It definitely affects the way we view what is happening. I agree with you that in America white people often accuse black people of something just because they are black. This is definitey shown in the video that we watched in class.

ReplyDeleteWhen we watched the videos with the cars being vandalized, thats made me think that white privilege is still prevelant as well. It was very shocking that the black men just sleeping in the car got all that attention and many people just walked by the white boys ruining that car. It is sad that our society still thinks and acts in racist ways. One person can't stop these acts, it has to be everyone and that may not happen in our lifetimes.
ReplyDeleteThe videos were definitely a good example of the existence of white privilege. It was really interesting how peopled didn’t want to get involved when it was the African American actors who were trashing the car. I think it was out of fear and that fear of other races is a possible unspoken rule of race.
